Biographical Details

Royston Mayoh is currently a Consultant in TV production. In May/June 2008 Royston was employed by Zeal to act as Programme Consultant to SVT (Swedish Television) and by Film 38 to advise and construct a corporate Entertainment Quiz show for their client NTL.

From his personal production base in Manchester (equipped with an Avid Editing suite) he has written, edited and directed many corporate commercials including an industrial integrated IBM software business package. Royston also produced, directed and post produced 3 years of the non profit making event THE MANCHESTER BOOK AWARD (2006/7/8) providing paid work experience for students of Stockport College. Royston regards his work with members of Stockport College, the Stockport Borough Council, Manchester City Council, SureStart and the Primary Care Trust as a perfect way for him to give something back after a most successful, enjoyable, productive and profitable career spanning over 50 years.

In terms of his activities outside of TV/Film production, Royston has taught a media course as a part-time lecturer at North Trafford College and, following his time as a Governor of the Stockport College Corporation, as a Consultant Lecturer and part-time Tutor for HND Moving Image together with a Foundation Degree in TV Production for Stockport College (validated by the Liverpool John Moores University) Royston is regularly invited to contribute (in vision) to the many TV shows involved in a nostalgic look at the history of TV Entertainment and the TV Stars of the past As an actor Royston (aka Roy Sherrington) has also appeared in many commercials, corporate productions and, more recently (November and December 2007), in 4 episodes of EMMERDALE as the Restaurant Owner Raymond Robinson.

Over his 50 yr career Royston was known in the UK TV Industry as a Director/Producer specialising in entertainment marking up many successes as a writer and innovator of original formats for BBC, ITV, Ch4, BskyB and FIVE. As a freelance director /producer he has earned a reputation for not only being associated with top rated shows but also for having a very healthy regard & respect for effective budgetary control.

Throughout his career, has specialised in innovative and ground breaking high-rated successes in Comedy / Dance / Game shows / Lifestyle and Music. This has resulted in BAFTA nominations and many International Awards.

His work in the production of popular music earned him the prestigious New York International Gold award for his production of the pop music hit TV series RAZZMATAZZ. Included among the many music specials are BB KING, PEGGY LEE, ROD STEWART, SADE, THE THREE TENORS & DONNA SUMMER.

In India Royston achieved strong programme and film making affiliations with Fahad Samar of Bombay Talkie productions, Anil Malhotra of Eagle Films (Bombay and Delhi Studios) and Siddhartha Basu & Karun Prabakaran of Synergy Communications. Under Royston's supervision and guidance these companies made over 350 top-rated and highly acclaimed programmes exclusively for the Indian market.

Whilst majoring on broadcast projects, Royston has also been involved in many corporate activities. He has directed AGMs for British Airways; and also for British Airways - the worldwide launch of the new (and now thankfully defunct!) controversial tail fins; Produced a Superdrug AGM at the NEC Birmingham; made various commercials for News International (The Sun, The News of the World, The Times) both on film and VT; directed the major 8-City National Flora Aerobathon event centered at Earls Court London, and has made many Telly-Sales commercials and long-form videos for various Theatrical productions both here and in the USA.

Royston also has a notable track record in TV comedy, producing and directing many of the now 'classic' comedy TV series including the legendary and quite disparate shows starring, amongst many others, KENNY EVERETT, LES DAWSON and TOMMY COOPER.

In terms of 'Award' shows Royston has directed the British Academy of Film & Television Arts (BAFTA Film Awards), the Evening Standard British Film Awards, the Channel [V] Music Awards in Delhi, the International Indian Film Awards in London and South Africa and produced, wrote and Directed The Good Food Awards for the BBC.

On the world stage Royston was responsible, as the Executive Producer, for a TV Spectacular from the Ostend Casino, which launched the, now leading, Belgian Commercial Station VTM. Royston Produced and Directed the first colour programme from Australia, the first satellite broadcast from Tokyo and directed THIS IS YOUR LIFE from the USA. He has been Consultant for major programme makers in France, Germany, Holland, Greece, Belgium, Sweden, India, Australia, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and South Africa.

Royston directed 20 shows for MBC (The Middle East Broadcasting Corporation) and HRH Prince Khalid bin Faisal, featuring the very best in Arabic Music from Saudi Arabia at the Abha Music Festival. In Mauritius Royston acted as Programme Consultant for another MBC (the Mauritius Broadcasting Company). He also acted as consultant and director for the launch (and then 13 shows) of the new 2003 series of the top-rated ITV daytime LIVE lifestyle show THIS MORNING for the Granada Media Group. At the very start of the year 2000 Royston was employed as INPUTS EDITOR for the LIVE, 26-hour, BBC Millennium Day Broadcast.

April/May in Bombay working as consultant producer / Director for ZEAL TV on the series Khelo Number Khelo to the launch of the Sikkim Super lottery on ZEE TV (T/X March 29 2002).

Prior to Bombay travelled to Jordan to recce the Arab Music Awards to be staged from the 'TREASURY' (AL KHASNEH) at Petra in September 2002

Consultant Producer/Director for the NDTV series of Entertainment Specials titled "JEENA ISI KA NAAM HAI" for ZEE TV (T/X March 2002).

Ongoing development and planning for the TV direction and staging of the Opening Ceremony for the World Summit on Sustainable Development (3rd Earth Summit) to be held in Johannesburg during August 2002.

2000

Royston visited Mauritius for work on their National Lotto programme, on his return in September 2000 he directed the Disney Kids Awards from the London Arena, followed by the third series of 5 ABHA Music Festival Concerts in Saudi Arabia.

June/July 2000 saw Royston as the Director of The First International Indian Film Awards from the Skyscape (Dome). Initial. This 3.5 hour Live Awards/Entertainment event was transmitted to SET India (Sony) + B4U also transmitted the following day by LWT as a two show special under the banner BIG SCREEN. The show celebrated and featured most of the major stars from Bollywood. The entertainment was provided by Kylie Minogue, Akshay Khan and the Shaolin Monks, Sanjay Dutt, The Millennium Dome Acrobatic Dancers and Lou Bega.

In May/June 2000 Royston wrote, produced and directed the Initial production of Bullionaire. This was a one-off special fully funded by Smirnoff and transmitted by Channel 5. The show marked the end of a nationwide Smirnoff "perfection" campaign/competition. From 10,000 applicants, 12 were invited to the Venue (Sound Republic, Leicester Square) where over 4 bizarre "game show" rounds 10 were eliminated leaving two who were asked to choose between a solid gold bullion bar worth £20,000 and a worthless, but visually identical, fake.

1999

On December 6th 1999 Royston took a week out from the BBC Millennium Event to direct the Heineken "Movies in Concert" event at the Ahoy Stadium in Rotterdam (transmitted on December 24th 1999 and December 31st 1999) after which he returned to the BBC to resume his post as Inputs Editor for the Historic worldwide TV celebration of the new Millennium.

July and August 1999 were spent directing the ABHA music Festival in Saudi Arabia for Gunnar Bemert, Prince Kalhed bin Faisal and Prince Bandar bin Saud of the King Fahad Foundation which was once again transmitted on MBC worldwide. On his return to the UK Royston was invited by the Editor of BBC 1's Live 28 hour Millennium Event ("2000 Today") to act as both Editorial Consultant and Inputs Editor.

During January, February and March Royston wrote, produced and directed a series of 5 commercials for the USA broadcast promoting a theatrical show currently headlining at the Eldorado Hotel and Casino in Reno Nevada, Branson Missouri and Venues in Florida whilst also acting as Development Producer for Initial for insertion into the BBC's Millennium Live transmission from Greenwich on December 31st 1999.

1998

In November/December 1998 he directed The Channel [V] Music Awards, this time from the Nehru Stadium in New Delhi. On his return from India Royston directed the Christmas special "In The House With Cleopatra" a sitcom/music extravaganza shot at Granada Manchester for Initial and ITV, this was transmitted on the ITV network on Christmas Eve 1998.

Middle East Broadcasting invited Royston to direct six major five-hour music specials from the King Fahad Cultural Centre in the Saudi Arabian resort of Abha. On his return Royston wrote, produced and directed a Celebration of Food and Drink at the Good Food Awards which was transmitted by BBC 1 in it's full version on October 1st 1998, and was repeated as a 'highlights' programme on October 12th.

In 1998 Royston again directed the Evening Standard British Film Awards for Initial/Channel 4 and the opening sequence for The Brits also for Initial. The Really Useful Company invited Royston to direct and co-write the Trevor MacDonald links and interviews for the ITV transmission of Andrew Lloyd-Webber's 50th Birthday Celebration. This was followed by another writing/directing project for Initial, which produced a 7' promotional video for their forthcoming Millennium Spectacular from the Royal Parks in Greenwich. This promo underlined the geographic importance of Greenwich as the very centre of time and space at midnight on December 31st 1999.

1997

During 1997 Royston directed the SE Asia element of the British Airways 'Project Utopia' launch in Bombay, The Batman & Robin Premiere from London's West End, The musical "Spirit of the Dance" from The Grand Theatre, Blackpool, and Produced/Directed ITV's gameshow "Catchphrase". Following the recording of the "Catchphrase" series Royston returned to India to direct The Channel [V] Music Awards, a multi camera TV music event (October 1997) from the Indira Gandhi Stadium in New Delhi, and from there to Hong Kong as Television Producer for the multi camera Heineken Music Horizons Classical/Pop concert from the Hong Kong Coliseum in Kowloon.
